Strange Interlude

Outside, light from the apartment illuminated the doorway. Windows on either side of the door cast a yellowed glow across the lawn, creating shadowy monster–like images that loomed in the semi–darkness. The air was filled with a sound of crickets that ebbed and flowed like automatic lawn sprinklers, while above, stars barely twinkled against the purplish blue of the early twilight sky.

Deep in the eclipse, just out of range of the building’s light, Alice stood alone, struggling with every ounce of her being to hold back the angry tears that threatened to pour unfettered from the deepest part of her. She lit a slightly crumpled cigarette — smashed when she landed on the floor — as her hands continued to shake with rage.

With all eyes on Whitey’s exit, no one noticed Em slip outside to join Alice. She slowly emerged from the belly of the monster, leaving behind the voices of the devoured, and stepped into the evening.

“Here’s your drink, Allie.” Em held out the quarter–filled cocktail glass — a glass lifted from the NCO club from a previous excursion. Condensation beaded heavy on the glass, the ice half its original size, effectively watering down what had begun as a very stiff cocktail, or more precisely, a triple shot.

Slowly, they walked away from the building until they were just out of sight of the party. Sounds from the apartment drifted through the night air like pollen; fluttering, separated, seeding the air with pieces of unintelligible words. They stood without talking, the sounds of the evening amplified by their own soundlessness. Em wanted to take Alice in her arms and hold the anger away, but she could not and merely asked, her voice soft with tenderness, “Are you all right?”

Alice looked at the cocktail taken from her friend, shook it slightly causing the watery drink to swirl up the sides of the glass and said, “If I had a real drink I’d be much better, but thanks.” She added in a low voice, “I’ll be fine.” She downed the contents then took a long drag off her cigarette. She exhaled slowly, letting the expelled smoke calm her somewhat.

Em moved as close to Alice as she dared and whispered, “Did he hurt you?”

Alice felt a sudden longing to be in Em’s arms right at that moment, holding her, loving her, to have her naked flesh pressed against Em’s, entwined in rapt passion. She didn’t want to think about Hud. His words. His face. Her humiliation. Yes. He hurt her, but at that moment she didn’t care. She just wanted to press her lips against the back of Em’s neck, that soft, sweet spot right at her hairline, feel Em’s ass pushing rhythmically against her crotch, feel her hands running over the suppleness of Em’s skin, her breasts. She wanted her, she wanted to be away from this party and away from these people and she didn’t want to think about or talk about Hud anymore. She hated him and she wished she would’ve killed him right there.
